Music for the Funeral Mass

The funeral Mass is a prayerful and heartfelt celebration of our loved ones. The music is an integral part of this liturgy, but it can feel overwhelming to know what is needed and which songs to choose. The following information and music suggestions are intended to help ease the burden and provide guidance as preparations for a funeral liturgy are prayerfully considered.

Order of Music

Mass Parts
This is the musical setting used for the Alleluia, Holy, Holy, Holy; Mystery of Faith, Great Amen, and Lamb of God

Opening Hymn
This hymn is sung during the entrance procession at the start of Mass.

Responsorial Psalm
The Psalm can be read by a lector or sung by a cantor. It goes between the First and Second readings.

Gospel Acclamation Verse
The Alleluia or Gospel Acclamation goes between the Second Reading and the Gospel.

Offertory Hymn
This hymn is sung after the Prayers of the Faithful, as the Priest prepares the altar and the gifts are brought up.

Communion Hymn
This hymn is sung during the Communion Procession.

Closing Hymn
This hymn is sung during the procession out of the church at the end of Mass.
